The redevelopment of an open air, L-shaped car-parking ‘island’ site, 3m below pavement level and adjacent to Old Street roundabout in London, with planning permission submitted for temporary usage of up to three years.
⥤ Brief
To create a flexible hospitality - with a food court for street food vans – and a community-focused exhibition and theatre/performance space, using up to 75% pre-existing structures, ranging from recycled containers to a tower structure currently part of a maintenance station for a Scottish nuclear power station.
⥤ Challenges
Creating a design using living walls and flowering rooftops to soften the scheme; ensuring good pedestrian throughfare and access and mitigating any impact on local residents via acoustic canopies and security marshalls ensuring orderly egress from the site at night-time.
